Bass & Pike Flies

Bass Flies

There’s no other way to put it! Bass flies are fun to fish, just check out our Mouserat fly! They are big and bright, and have lots of rubber legs and googly eyes. They float high, push lots of water, and make a lot of noise. These discount flies are usually tied out of deer hair, which is a hollow bodied hair, making them very buoyant. They are tied to mimic creatures like rats, mice, snakes, and frogs, such as our frog swimming fly.

There are many ways to fish these different bass flies. Most often, you will need an 8-weight rod with a floating line, and an eight-foot leader that is tapered down to the 10-12-pound class. When fishing these fly fishing flies for bass, you want to cast towards the bank, or parallel to it. In most cases, you want to make the fly land like a hand grenade when it hits the water. Think about the noise a frog would make when it jumps in the lake, or how a mouse would struggle to swim if it fell in the water. This is how you want to make your bass flies swim. Loud and erratic. The exception to this would be if you are fishing a crystal clear lake, or fishing a lake that receives a ton of pressure. In these circumstances, bass tend to be spookier, and a hell of a lot more educated, and therefore require a stealthier approach. The best bass flies for a lake like this will be tied thin and sparse, and usually in a variety of natural colors.

Similar to bass flies, pike flies are designed to catch predator fish. Pike fly patterns are also big and bright, and designed to push lots of water. They are usually tied longer than bass flies to incorporate more movement, and represent a variety of other fish, as that is what Pike mainly incorporate into their diet. These dry flies will most often be tied with weed guards, as Pike tend to mainly ambush their prey in shallow, weedy areas of the lake. This also provides fly anglers a great opportunity to sight fish for these magnificent fish. You can search for these fish hunting in shallow waters, make a cast to them, and if you present the fly properly, you will be rewarded with an exciting and super aggressive eat. Pike flies can also be used to fish for other species of fish like Musky, Bass, and large trout. Unlike fly fishing flies for bass, pike flies will get chewed up by the carnivorous teeth found inside a pikes mouth, and fly anglers will therefore want to make sure they have enough of them when traveling to a pike fishing destination.
