Barbless Nymphs

Barbless nymph flies are a great way to go when all you plan on doing is "catch and release". Barbless nymphs in a lot of our rivers across the country may be the "only" way you can go, similar to the situation with its dry counterpart, barbless flies. Park regulations may require use of barbless hooks at the location you are fishing. Please check with your local park ranger for fishing restrictions. Fishing with barbless nymphs can always result in a good day of fishing for trout amongst other species, considering trout spend about 90% of their time feeding below the surface of the water. This is also where the nymph spends its time before emerging into an adult.

Nymph flies imitate the stage in the lifecycle of insects such as stoneflies, mayflies and caddis, where they live in the water. Commonly found at lake bottoms, riverbeds and under the surface of the water, they provide an abundant source of food for fish, and as a result, barbless nymphs are an effective method of securing a good catch. The Barbless Prince Nymph and Pheasant Tail are a couple of our favorite barbless nymphs. Fishing barbless nymph flies will help insure you that the fish will return unharmed, along with proper handling. Not only do barbless nymphs help sustain the trout population, but they also make it nice if your dry fly ends up getting stuck in you instead of the fishes’ mouth. Barbless hooks make it much easier to remove a hook from your skin when you are fishing barbless nymphs. We prefer fishing barbless nymph flies primarily most of the time with this in mind. Also, it’s much easier to remove a hook from a smaller fish’s mouth or if the hook is in a location that would be difficult without harming the fish. One of our favorite barbless nymph fly hooks is the Kona BC1 or BBS.

Barbless nymphs not only protect private water and wild trout fisheries, but they also add to the sport as well. When fishing barbless, you must keep a tight line when fighting any fish or the hook will simply fall out and result in losing your fish. This always adds an element to any fish that has been hooked with a barbless fly, evens the game a little. There are a lot of rivers with special regulations enforcing barbless hooks, but even the ones that don't we still feel like it’s a good thing to do.
