Stripped Bass Fly Fishing

I have been chasing Striped Bass all over California for most of my life. From when I was a young kid, I was fly fishing bass flies on the Colorado River to the Sacramento Delta, as well as a bunch of the local SoCal Lakes. With this knowledge and experience, I have made this list of my top-5 best bass flies to hook Striper. We also carry some color variations for most of these.

Right off the bat I am going to start with some controversy, I might as well warn you now. A handful of people will agree with me but I figure most will not. Hear me out… if you’re new to fly fishing for bass or are looking for some new ideas, then these insights will probably help you.

#1 Dustin’s Destroyer/EP Shad

Dustins-Destroyer-EP-Striper-Fly

My number one got to fly is the Dustin’s Destroyer/EP Shad (Peanut Butter). This fly has accounted for more Bass, including largemouth than any other pattern in my box. Here in SoCal the Shad (Grey/White) are deadly on all the lakes, along with the Chartreuse/White. A sleeper for the Delta is the Perch color to imitate a Bluegill. Here’s the proof, including the top pic that my dad caught.

#2 Clouser Minnow

The Clouser Minnow will be number one on most people’s list and for good reason. I think the Charteuse/White Clouser Minnow has caught more Striper than any other bass fly on the face of this planet. For some reason that jigging motion just drives the Stripers mad. Two other colors that I love to use are the Grey/White and Red/White.

#3 Name Changer/Game Changer

The Game Changer has really been charging up my list of best bass flies in all its forms. From our Name Changer to the Bucktail and Feather Game Changer. The kick that this fly has is unlike any other bass fly on the market, and can be tied from 3 inches to 14inches long. The Pearl and Rainbow are my go to colors.

#4 Smushmouth

The bright flash from the Smushmouth bass fly will pull fish from a mile away. The flash can be a little too much for local clearwater lakes but is money for the delta and surf anglers. Chartreuse/White and Bronze/White are my favorite colors. This is also my go to Tuna fly.

#5 Mac’s GT Deceiver

Mac-GT-Deceiver

Mac’s GT Deceiver is for anglers who are looking to weed out the smaller schoolie and shaker Striper. Then these bass flies will draw those bigger fish. This fly measures 10” long and is very easy to cast compared to other fly fishing flies for bas in this length. The Black/White is my choice.

Here’s a few others as runner ups in the contest:
