Trout Fishing

Tungsten Beads

Ever since I started fishing, it was engrained into my head the value of tungsten beads, especially when euronymphing.  Tungsten has a density of 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter, while brass has a density of 8.73 grams per cubic centimeter and lead being 11.34 grams per cubic centimeter.

The added density means a smaller bead to get your fly down into the feeding zone.  With the popularity of euronymphing, this is now more or less common knowledge amongst fly anglers.  As a Competition Angler, I get asked for my opinion on all facets of fly angling, and I’m always happy to share my thoughts.  Tungsten beads comes up quite frequently, and in the past I’ve shared my opinion based on empirical data, but never have I backed this empirical data up with hard cold facts.

Best Dry Flies

BEST DRY FLIES

Fly-Fishing-Dry-Flies

There are millions of different dry flies that exist today.  They are designed to mimic insects like mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies and various terrestrials.  Dry flies can be tied with natural materials such as deer hair and hackle feathers, and synthetic materials like foam and rubber legs.  No matter which you choose, it must do two things:  Float, and be durable.

Big Streamers for Big Trout

Big-Flies-Big-Brown-Trout

We all know Trout of all sorts and sizes will eat flies and bugs of all varieties, and you can catch some big fish during the big hatches of Salmonflies or Green Drakes.

However, when consistently targeting the biggest trout in a river, it is no mystery that big Trout like big flies. In particular, big trout (especially Browns) specifically seek out and target larger meals.  The most consistent large meals in any water are Baitfish/Leeches/Crayfish, etc.  Therefore, when targeting these big trout, it makes the most sense to use our Trophy Streamers, the large streamer flies that best replicate the proportions that they seek.

Alaska Trout Camp

Alaska-Trout-Fly-Fishing

Their fishing program is built around targeting the biggest native Rainbow Trout in the world. During the months of September and October, these massive non-anadromous Rainbows move from the lake and into the river to gorge themselves on salmon eggs, flesh, and leeches. They run from September 1st to November 1st  because this is the prime time to catch these monster ‘bows by way of the fly.
