As fly fisherman, mayfly fly patterns frequently fall upon in our fly boxes throughout the year.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eMayfly fly patterns have 2 wings that sit vertical, and have transparency to them and often detailed designs.  Adult mayflies are most often fished and easily identified via \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/fly-fishing-flies-discount\/dry-flies\/terrestrials\"\u003eterrestrial flies\u003c\/a\u003e.  They will have their wings intact and will be floating well on the water.  Though the mayfly dry fly spends little time on the water, this stage is the most popular \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/fly-fishing-flies-discount\/dry-flies\"\u003edry flies for fly fishing\u003c\/a\u003e on most rivers.  If you get down to the fishes’ level on the river on a cloudy day, you will see a lot of these on the water and heads popping and slurping them down just as quickly. Mayfly fly hatches can happen anytime of the day, though morning and evening are often the most prolific.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eOne mayfly fly that stands out among the rest is the all-knowing BWO, or baetis. This mayfly fly pattern can be imitated with various fly selections. The Adams is a very well-known mayfly fly that imitates this mayfly well, amongst many other. These are a very dominant bug in the western states.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe mayfly fly offer year-round dry fly fishing and are located across the world.  Some of the most prolific hatches are mayfly dry fly. Baetis will hatch year-round giving mayfly dry fly patterns a necessary place in your box anytime you’re on the water, try a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/fly-fishing-flies-discount\/dry-flies\/dry-mayflies\/baetis-zinger\"\u003eBaetis Zinger\u003c\/a\u003e or \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/fly-fishing-flies-discount\/dry-flies\/dry-mayflies\/blue-wing-olive-parachute\"\u003eBlue Wing Olive Parachute flies\u003c\/a\u003e to imitate them.  In the spring and summer, you have dozens of different species that hatch.  If it weren’t for mayflies, entomology would really be rather simple. Mayflies hatch at all different times of the year, the nymphs can look pretty different from species to species and they vary greatly in size.  It’s best to refer to local hatch charts and talk to local fly shops on the rivers you plan to fish to discover what mayfly fly may be hatching at any given time of the year. Always good to have a wide assortment of mayfly fly patterns on hand, meaning size, shape and color. For the mayfly, the sailboat like wings are the key to identifying it’s a mayfly fly.  They are delicate, slow flying and beautiful. Though identifying the species from each other can be more of a challenge, mayflies themselves are likely the easiest dry fly to identify. The two most common dry flies tied today are the traditional catskills, and the parachute dry. The tail material should be the same as the hackle material you’re using for the wings. The body can be tied with a variety of different materials. You can use fine, dry fly dubbing from Hareline or Pirit’s Antron dubbing is also a good option for Adams fly pattern bodies. For some variety, you could use stripped quills dyed grey or natural, or try the colored version called the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/adams-wulff\/\"\u003eAdams Wulff dry fly\u003c\/a\u003e. Additionally, always make your first cast count - each cast after your initial diminishes the likelihood of hookups. I personally like to cast downstream to rising fish; the less line they can see the less likely they are to spook. Finally calm your nerves - you’ll miss more hookups setting the hook early than you will late - barbless hooks are essential if you’re catch and release dry fly fishing with an Adams fly pattern. This is how I fish them most often; it involves having a bigger dry that is easily visible (i.e. parachute adams size 10) as my “sighting” fly and six to ten inches behind it have another significantly smaller dry tied on (i.e. Parachute Adams 16 and smaller). What this setup allows us as an angler to do is present those fish with two different sizes of the Parachute Adams fly (or two fly options if you choose to fish different patterns). Additionally, it also allows us to watch our small dry fly and fish it effectively even if we can't physically see it. If a trout rises in a 6-10 inch radius around your larger fly then set the hook. They might not be eating the sighting fly but you know your small fly is right behind it and that is often the bug that the fish decide to commit to. Lastly you can use a big Parachute Adams fly as a light dry\/dropper rig, this technique is effective because you can cover two different columns of water at the same time and present those fish with a dry and a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/fly-fishing-flies-discount\/nymphs\"\u003enymph fly\u003c\/a\u003e at the same time. When using a Parachute Adams fly pattern as a dry dropper fly, it is important to know the float to weight ratio as you don't want to sink your dry fly with a heavy nymph.
