{"title":"Fly and Flies","description":"Flies are used for fly-fishing for trout.  There are thousands upon \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ethousands of different types of flies, but there are three main \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ecategories that flies fall into.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e   The first category of flies is dry flies.  These are any type of flies \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ethat will float on the surface of the water.  Names like Parachute \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAdams, Elk Hair Caddis, and Griffith’s Gnats, are a few of the \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003emost recognized dry flies.  Most anglers really enjoy fly-fishing \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ewith these flies, as it provides a very visual way to see the trout eat \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ethe fly.  There are many different varieties of dry flies, but most \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eare designed to mimic mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHowever, there are plenty of others that are designed to mimic \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eterrestrials such as grasshoppers, beetles and ants.  Although \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003efishing with these types of flies can be very visual and exciting, it \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eis however, sometimes not the most practical.  80% of a trout’s diet \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eis consumed under the water, leaving trout to feed on the surface \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eonly 20% of the time. This is why nymph fishing is usually most \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eeffective. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e   Nymphs, or flies that are fished below the surface of the water, \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eare the begging stages of how an adult fly is formed.  Typically, \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003enymphs are found in and around the rocks, on the bottom of a \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003estream, lake, or river.  Copper Johns, Pheasant Tails, and Hares \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEars are very popular nymph patterns.  Most of the time, these \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003etypes of flies will be tied with weight added to them, in order to \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ekeep the flies near the bottom.  The most common of these are \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ebead headed nymphs.  Because these flies are below the surface of \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ethe water, and you cannot see when a trout has eaten them, most \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003efly anglers will choose to fish them with a strike indicator, or the \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eequivalent of a bobber if you are familiar with conventional \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003efishing.  Basically, it is a float of some sort of variety, which is \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003edesigned to go under the water or twitch after a fish has eaten your \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eflies.  When this happens, you set the hook, and start fighting the \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003efish.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e   The third category of flies is called streamers.  These are flies \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003esuch as woolly buggers and muddler minnows that are designed to \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003erepresent leeches, baitfish, and crayfish. These flies are usually \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ecast across the water and either stripped back in, or simply allowed \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eto swing in the current, representing the way that a leech or baitfish \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ewould swim.  Usually when trout eat these types of flies, it is in a \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003every aggressive manor, resulting in a strike that can be felt \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ethroughout the entire fly rod.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e   Flies are like works of art, and sometimes beauty is in the eyes of \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ethe beholder.
