So, as all of us know the nymph is the stage of the insect that is still aquatic. Different than the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/fly-fishing-flies-discount\/dry-flies\/dry-mayflies\"\u003emayfly dry fly\u003c\/a\u003e these mayfly nymphs sometimes they have a bead and sometimes does not, but all versions are fished under the water in rivers and lakes. The more informative description of nymphs is as follows: A nymph is the immature form of an insect that undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. A nymph differs from a larva in that a nymph becomes an adult without first becoming a pupa and that a nymph typically resembles a smaller, wingless version of an adult, whereas a larva can differ radically from the corresponding adult form.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eSo, it’s easy to say not all insects go through a nymphal stage. But we still refer to them as nymphs, whether they are or not they are fished usually on a dead drift, others act as an emerging insect. Most mayfly nymphs fall into the aspect of being, swimmers, crawlers, borrowers, and finally clingers. Whereas a nymph \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/fly-fishing-flies-discount\/nymphs\/midges-chronomids\"\u003echironomid flies\u003c\/a\u003e have a life cycle of just larvae and pupa. In contrast to nymphs that develop on land, the aquatic young of dragonflies, damselflies, stoneflies, and mayflies are sometimes referred to and called naiads. Their metamorphosis is more complicated, involving a change to a different environment. The aquatic nymph has gills and other modifications for an aquatic existence. Nymphs are an important element in the food of trout and are imitated by mayfly nymph patterns in which fly fisherman use when nymph fishing for trout. The aquatic nymph at maturity floats to the surface or crawls out of the water, goes through its last molt and emerges as a winged adult.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eNymph chironomid flies are typically referred to as midge larvae and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/fly-fishing-flies-discount\/nymphs\/midges-chronomids\/cdc-midge-pupa\"\u003emidge pupa patterns\u003c\/a\u003e. They technically do not go through a nymphal stage in their life cycle. A common combination would be to have an \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theflystop.com\/elk-hair-caddis\"\u003eelk hair caddis\u003c\/a\u003e as a top fly and a hare's ear nymph as a dropper. The elk hair caddis stimulates the fish to want to eat. The fish will see that first and most of the time it will rise to take a second look. If the fish refuses your top fly, the gold ribbed hares ear dropper fly will be close behind to give the angler another option to stimulate an eat. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe hare's ear fly in this rigging is most times as small and realistic as you can get away with while your top fly is sized to make sure it can float your hare’s ear nymph without getting dragged down. The dry fly on top is often fished in a large size to be easily visible. Using a high floatation top fly gives the angler one of the best chances of keeping eye contact with the rig in faster waters which is important because it is acting as your indicator for your dropper fly as well. If the fish eats the hare’s ear, your top fly will stop or go underwater. The extra buoyancy on top is good because it gives the angler a wider range of weight options to choose from for the hare’s ear fly. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eTo get it down if the water is flowing fast, you will need a heavier hares ear pattern and most likely a larger attractor dry fly on top. While if it’s a slower stream, you are able to get away with a lightweight hare's ear nymph pattern and smaller fly on top, or even a totally unweighted Hares ear. Some prefer it unweighted because they believe that it gives the hare's ear the most realistic action. The fish will first see the anglers fly and most of the time it will rise to take a second look. The profile of this fly gives it a wide range of insects that it can mimic. The top fly gives the angler the best chance of keeping eye contact with the rig in faster waters which is important because it is acting as your indicator for your prince nymph fly as well. Some specific patterns have foam in the thorax while others will use natural hairs. Some prefer the unweighted prince nymph fly version because they believe that it gives prince nymphs the most realistic action. The weight range of prince nymphs is achieved with the beads used. Some of the beads on a prince nymph fly will be brass, and prince nymphs with tungsten beads are not uncommon either. Tungsten beaded prince nymphs will get down to the bottom of the river much faster than prince nymphs with a brass bead. It is very common to find a full weight range of prince nymphs in a well-versed anglers fly box.
