The Adams flies are considered one of the most versatile and effective dry fly patterns ever created. Adams dry flies are traditionally tied with a brown tail, grey body, and a mix of grizzly and brown saddle hackle for the wing. That’s why the Adams fly is a great go-to pattern for any darker colored Mayfly hatch. The Adams fly pattern can also be tied as a nymph, wet fly and emerger fly. The monotone coloration of Adams dry fly variations allows them to imitate a large variety of bug life on the water. From mayflies to midges, having a variety of sizes of Adams flies is a must while out on the water. For mayfly imitations I’d keep sizes 10-16 Adams with you, and for midges I’d carry sizes 20 and 22. Adams dry flies can be tied catskills style or the popular parachute style. Below we’ll discuss how to tie Adams dry flies.

 Tying Adams Flies

To tie an Adams dry fly, I'd start with a standard down eye dry fly hook between size 10 and 20. The two most common dry flies tied today are the traditional catskills, and the parachute dry. The tail material should be the same as the hackle material you’re using for the wings. The body can be tied with a variety of different materials. You can use fine, dry fly dubbing from Hareline or Pirit’s Antron dubbing is also a good option for Adams fly pattern bodies. For some variety, you could use stripped quills dyed grey or natural, or try the colored version called the Adams Wulff dry fly. Tying it with a deer hair body, called the Adams Irresistible fly, makes it higher floating and thus a better choice in fast water. And finally, try the Female Adams dry fly pattern that imitates a female dropping her eggs back in the creek, another point when duns are vulnerable to a waiting trout.

 Fly Fishing Adams Dry Flies

So, you’re on the water, you’ve identified there’s something hatching all around you, and fish are rising - now what? If you’re uncertain what’s coming off, go with an Adams flies and do your best to match the size.  Then, move your feet to where your casting ability can comfortably reach the rising fish. Additionally, always make your first cast count - each cast after your initial diminishes the likelihood of hookups. I personally like to cast downstream to rising fish; the less line they can see the less likely they are to spook. Finally calm your nerves - you’ll miss more hookups setting the hook early than you will late - barbless hooks are essential if you’re catch and release dry fly fishing with an Adams fly pattern. There’s a higher likelihood of fish swallowing the fly when Adams fly fishing.
