One of the most effective ways to cover water columns in the river or in still water is to use a dry dropper set up. This means that you have a fly rigged first as your “top” fly and add a length of tippet, most commonly from the hook’s bend and trail a “dropper’ behind underneath the surface of the water like the prince nymph fly. One of our favorite droppers is the psycho prince nymph.

 Popular Rigging Combinations

A common combination would be to have a stimulator fly as a top fly and prince nymphs as a dropper. The fish will first see the anglers fly and most of the time it will rise to take a second look. If the fish refuses the dry fly up top fly, the prince nymph dropper fly will be close behind to give the angler another option to stimulate the fish to eat.

 Characteristics of the Prince Nymph

The prince nymphs in this rigging are most times as small and realistic as you can get away with while your top fly is sized to make sure you can float the prince nymphs without dragging down your other fly. The profile of this fly gives it a wide range of insects that it can mimic. The top fly gives the angler the best chance of keeping eye contact with the rig in faster waters which is important because it is acting as your indicator for your prince nymph fly as well. If the fish eats the prince nymph fly pattern your stimulator fly will stop or go underwater.

 Colors and Patterns

Having a wide range of colors and sizes is a good idea. Some specific patterns have foam in the thorax while others will use natural hairs. The extra buoyancy is good because it gives the angler a wider range of prince nymph variations.

 Hostile Water Situations

If the water is flowing fast, you will need heavier prince flies to get down while if it is a slower stream, you are able to get away with lightweight prince nymphs or a totally unweighted prince nymph. Some prefer the unweighted prince nymph fly version because they believe that it gives prince nymphs the most realistic action. The weight range of prince nymphs is achieved with the beads used. Some of the beads on a prince nymph fly will be brass, and prince nymphs with tungsten beads are not uncommon either. Tungsten beaded prince nymphs will get down to the bottom of the river much faster than prince nymphs with a brass bead. It is very common to find a full weight range of prince nymphs in a well-versed anglers fly box. Some of our favorites are the bead head prince nymph and the tungsten prince nymph flies.
