Trout Streamers

Best Trout Streamers

Although many consider all streamers trout streamers, in fact these trout streamers are also effective for all sorts of species of fish. For now, we can focus on streamer flies for trout as well as the best trout streamers. Trout streamers in general represent any form of baitfish or crayfish, etc. They are usually fished by stripping and swimming the fly across the water. Although in some cases they are effective when fish dead drifted as you would a nymph or beadhead. The movement of the trout streamer represents the movement of the baitfish they replicate. Trout streamers can be fished in various sizes, and can be effective for even small trout. However, if large trout are your focus, you may want to focus on the trout streamers under the trophy streamer section. These larger patterns, and some that are even articulated for added size and movement are some of the best trout streamers you can fish, particularly for large trout.

As far as some of the best trout streamers, it is always good to carry some of the basics. Woolly Buggers (both beadhead and standard) are always a great option. In fact, the woolly bugger deserves a spot in absolutely everyone fly fisherman’s fly box. Other great options are sculpin patterns, leech patterns, and shiner patterns. All these dry flies are standard fare on most the water trout use for habitat. A good run of theses patterns in all of their various sizes and colors would get an angler in a position for success when fishing a streamer.

Often these patterns are fished on floating lines and longer leaders if the water does not have much depth or the fish are sitting higher in the water column. Various retrieves will work, but slower steady retrieves can often work. When trout are really chasing and they will accept a fast retrieve it can set you up for some of the most explosive strikes you will see all season. In other situations when you really need to get down, it is wise to fish these trout streamers on a sink tip or full sinking line. In these cases, it is often prudent to shorten your leader up quite a bit. The shorter leader will allow your flies to stay down and in line with the sinking portion of the line which is where the fish are, rather than riding up to high in the water column and passing over their heads. Be sure to give streamer fishing a try, it can be some of the most rewarding fishing you will do all season.
