Upper and Lower Lake Mary were built for water storage for the city of Flagstaff. Not a typical destination fly fishing lake, we decided to include Upper Lake Mary because it holds pike to 40 plus inches. Lake Mary also holds rainbow trout, brown trout, bass, and sunfish. The lake is very seasonal with spring being a great time to fly fish for pike. A 6 wt. rod with both floating and sink-tip lines, along with a few big flashy pike flies, is all you need for success. Pike prefer the weed beds and underwater structure so fishing these areas will produce. You can fish from shore, but a float tube can make all the difference. If you want some bone jarring action, fish a big top water popper in and around the structure and weed beds, and get ready for some explosive takes. So if you’re in the mood for something a little different, then check out Upper Lake Mary.
