Starting at Wilbur Dam, the Watauga tailwater flows through the communities of Siam and Hunter, the towns of Elizabethton and Watauga, then empties out into Boone Lake near Johnson City, Tennessee. The Watauga Tailwater is considered by many people to be one of the best trout fishing destinations in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.  This 16-mile long tailwater receives daily releases of cold water from Wilbur Dam for the sole purpose of recreational activities. This water flows over its numerous shoals and riffles, helping to create an environment that is perfect for aquatic insect life. This also makes for great year round angling. Prime dry fly and sight fishing occur from the spring Caddis Hatch throughout the heat of the summer. The best section of the tailwater is the TVA designated “Quality Trout Zone” which begins at Smalling Bridge and continues downstream for approximately 2.5 miles. The Watauga Tailwater is home to a variety of wildlife,  and picturesque country farms. From beginners to experts, the Watauga Tailwater offers great fishing opportunities for everyone, creating memories that will last a life time.
