The Metolius River bubbles up from a large spring and flows through gorgeous ponderosa pine forests. It's waters are always crystal clear and cold, and it has to be one of the most beautiful rivers in the country to fish. Here, anglers can find good numbers of native redside rainbows along with a few brown and bull trout.
The Metolius River is managed as a "fly fishing only" river, and guides are not permitted to operate on this water. The trout here grow big... REALLY BIG! But they don't get that way from being stupid. Rainbow and Brown trout have been caught here in excess of 24 inches. Not to mention, there are also Bull Trout that will go 10 plus pounds. But like we said, the clear water, finicky fish, and immense insect hatches will test the skills of even the most seasoned of fly fisherman.
Hatches here include Blue Wing Olive’s, PMD’s, Green Drakes, Mahogany Duns, and a variety of caddis...... and that's just to name a few. If you like fishing streamers, this is the perfect water for doing so. Sometimes the fish here see so many of the exact replica flies, that tossing a big chunk of meat perpendicular to the current, can reward you with an absolute monster. Early morning and late evenings are the perfect time for doing so.
