Provo River

The Provo River can be broken down into three main sections.  The first, or upper section, is from its headwaters to Jordanell Reservoir. This is a beautiful section of river that resembles the characteristics similar to those of a freestone river. This section is made up of long riffles and runs that hold good numbers of both brown and cutthroat trout. The only down side to this section is that most of the land here is posted.  Please respect landowner rights.

The section below Jordanell Reservoir is what's known as the middle section. This tail-water from Jordanell Reservoir to Deer Creek Lake, is a wonderful piece of water which is very easy to access, and holds a tremendous number of quality brown trout. Browns average 16-18 inches, with 20 inchers being very common. Every year, fish of over 24 inches are also caught here. There is also a good number of large rainbows and cutthroats that populate this section of the river. With the help of deep dark pools and heavy undercut banks, the trout population flourish's here.

The river below Deer Creek Lake also contains a gigantic population of trout. In this world calss section of water, browns, rainbows, and cutthroat trout all flourish here.  Stories and pictures of fish of over 24 inches happen on a regular basis here, and Browns here have been released measuring 30.  The river here flows through the beautiful Provo Canyon which is one of the most scenic areas in the state. Deep pools, cascading riffles, and amazing runs, make up the water in the canyon.  The Provo eventually flows into Utah Lake just outside the town of Provo. Access throughout this stretch of river is very easy, providing anglers plenty of places to get in and get a line wet.

The Provo is practically a bug factory and offers an abundant supply of mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies. The fishing here is amazing, especially when multiple hatches occur at once. Western Green Drakes and Pale Morning Duns are two of the best mayfly hatches that occur on the river. Large stoneflies and caddis are also very prolific and dependable. Big "buggy" nymphs like Turds and trophy streamers also work extremely well.  If you are trying to catch a trophy of a fish, target some of the deeper undercut banks with this thing.... trust us..... you won't be disappointed! If you're going to be in Utah, be sure to check out the Provo. It is an outstanding fishery which has been labeled as one of the best trout rivers in the country. Although the Provo may not get the attention like many other larger rivers do, it is  not to be overlooked or forgotten about. The Provo is a short 45-60 minute ride from Salt Lake City, making it very easy to check out if you are limited on time.
