Streamer Flies

Big fish like big meals. These trophy streamers are sure to catch the biggest fish in the river. A form of streamer flies, these fly fishing trophy streamers are tied to much larger proportions. Many of them are tied on size 4 and even larger long shank hooks designed specifically for streamer flies. Streamer flies in general represent baitfish and crayfish, but these fly fishing streamers are tied to specifically represent the larger end of the baitfish food chain. Do yourself a favor and be sure to fish this next time you are out on the water. You may surprise yourself at the size of fish that is hidden in your favorite river or lake. We also like to fish these for other species such as smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, pike, and many other species. It is best to fish most of the patterns here on a 6 weight or higher rod, the extra rod strength will just make pounding that far bank or dredging a deep pool with a sink tip that much easier. In addition, if you do hook into the biggest fish in the river the extra strength of a heavier rod will give you the lifting power to get the fish up and out of the closet snag or structure. Also, try to keep on the heaviest tippet you can get away with for the water you are fishing. Often with streamer fishing heavier tippet is not a problem, and they can even be fished on very short leaders. This way, if fishing a sink tip, there is not much distance between the streamer fly and the end of the sinking line. That short distance will keep your discount fly pattern down where it needs to be.
