Tungsten Bead Heads & Tungsten Flies

Tungsten flies are a great choice for nymph fly fishing, and there are a number of reasons for this.

The first of reason is because they are heavier than what a regular beadhead nymph is. As a matter of fact, tungsten bead head nymphs can weigh up to three times as much as their couterparts. Especially if a particular tungsten bead heads have two beads attached to it. Fly anglers who like to fish fast moving water, like these types of tungsten flies for their ability to get down in the water column quickly.

The second reason is because they make a good anchor fly for a lot of different styles of European Nymphing. In these different forms of dry fly fishing, these tungsten nymphs are tied on to the very end of your leader. Above this fly, there will be one or two other flies tied on to the leader. The bottom tungsten bead head nymphs will then act like a bowling ball for weight, enabling a fly angler to get in direct contact with his or flies, while they are drifting down the river. This allows you to feel every little thing that is going on with your flies, resulting in more fish being caught.

Another reason tungsten bead heads are so popular, is because lots of times they allow anglers to not have to add weight to the leader while nymph fishing. The more flies and the more weight you attach to a leader, the more difficult it becomes to cast. Also, if the attached weight gets hung up on the bottom, chances are you will break off your tungsten nymph flies and the attached weight on the bottom. You will then have to re-rig your leader with more flies and weight, not only costing you valuable fishing time, but some of your paycheck as well. Tungsten bead head nymphs can be double the price of what a regular beadhead nymph can be.

Finally, if you love to fish with a dry/dropper set up, then tungsten flies should be the #1 choice for this type of fishing. Because tungsten bead heads sink so quickly, there is no delay or drag holding up your floating dry fly. They quickly get down in the water column, allowing your dry fly to act like an indicator.
