Abacos
Most anglers have dreams of vast schools tailing Bonefish on a beautiful flat with emerald green water, silky sand beaches and warm sunny days. Then Abacos is one of those special places where your dreams can come true. The Abaco Islands sits in the northern part of the Bahamas with the crystal blue of the Atlantic just outside the flats. Abacos’ main town is Marsh Harbor that is easily accessible by plane from Florida. Once you land you will have hundreds miles of some of the most stunning flats in the Bahamas.
With in all of those miles of fishable water lies Abacos’ claim to fame, their vast population of eager Bonefish just waiting to eat a fly. Weather it would be chasing numbers in the Marls to venturing out to Cross Harbor flat to find a big bruiser bone. Aboacos has it all. Bonefish are not the only creature to inhabit the flats. It’s common to see Permit, Tarpon, Barracuda, Shark and Snapper. And you want to make sure that you are prepared at anytime to at any time if a boogie board sized Permit or a hyperactive Tarpon decides to show up to the party.
What should you bring to make sure that your Abacos trip is as much fun as possible? Well I would make sure you have most of the gear packed in your bag:
➢ 8-9 weight rod with matching reel and line (bonefish)
➢ 10 weight rod with matching reel and line (permit)
➢ 11-12 weight rod with matching reel and line (sharks, cuda)
➢ Wading shoes
➢ Light weight clothing
➢ Breathable waterproof rain jacket and pant
➢ Leaders
➢ Tippet
➢ Flies
One little parting thought. The flats are not he only place to land a fish of a lifetime. The open water is almost as good as the flats, with world-class Tuna, Dorado and Marlin just a few miles outside the flats.
