ASCENSION BAY, MEXICO
Ascension Bay is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Southeastern Mexico and separates the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The Bay is comprised of hundreds of mile of flawless sand flats and water clearer than the tequila you will be drinking at the end of the day. The beauty of Ascension Bay is that any angler from the seasoned vet to the novice saltwater anger can both have a great time. With vast numbers of bonefish that are eager to pick up your fly and take you for a run. To the surprising number of shots you will get at weary permit that will keep any fly fishing enthusiast happy. In fact, Ascension Bay is one of the best places to catch a permit on the fly. I know a few anglers that have tried to get permit at other areas before they get their first permit an Ascension Bay. Then you can move deeper into the lagoons where the snook, tarpon and Barracuda live. Most of the tarpon that call Ascension Bay home are going to run from ten to forty pounds. But with the smaller size come the spunk. The will jump more than a hurdler getting ready for the Olympics. With all these species residing in short close proximity of one another the chance for a grand slam is better than most areas. Some anglers are able to get the glam in just one day.
You want to make sure to bring at least 3 different rod and reel combinations because you really have no idea of what you will see next. You want to miss a shot at a permit of a lifetime because you left an extra set up at home. For most of the bonefish you will want to bring a seven to nine weight with a matching reel and floating line. For the tarpon, permit and snook you should bring nine to ten weight rods with match large arbor reels. Crazy Charlie’s and the Mini Puffs will spark some interest from the bones. Try the Crab Sandwich or the Swimming Crab for the permit. Clousers, Sea-Ducers and Enrico Crab are a few good patterns for the snook and tarpon.
