Fly Fishing Jig

Czech Nymphing has become one of the most popular, if not the most popular, form of fly fishing within the past few years. This is for a very good reason too. It is an extremely effective form of fly fishing, and is the go-to method in fly fishing competitions held around the world.

The method behind Czech nymphing is relatively simple. Anglers will use longer fly rods, typically 10-11 feet in length, with a fly line designed specifically for Czech nymphing. They will rig a long leader, sometimes up to twenty feet in length, with a highly visible section of mono tied in which acts like an indicator. This line, or sighter as it’s known, helps to identify how your czech nymphing flies are drifting in the current, and if a fish has chosen to eat them. On the end of this leader will be your Czech nymphing flies or jig flies. These Czech nymphing flies are heavily weighted and are usually tied on a 90-degree jig style of hook. They are designed to act like a weight, almost like fishing with a conventional rod, and help give anglers a sense of “feel” when they are fishing. Above this by a foot or so, a fly angler will tie in a tippet ring which is a round ring similar to a swivel. This ring provides a place to tie on, at a 90-degree angle, another piece of relatively short tippet material. At the end of this piece of tippet will be another Czech fly.

This set-up will then be cast, or lobbed upstream, and allowed to drift back down. As it drifts back down, an angler will then raise the rod tip in order to remove the slack out of the line. This is done to get direct contact and feel with the Czech nymphing flies. When a fish eats them, the sighter will hesitate or even get pulled under the water, and you then set the hook.

One of the reasons that these jig flies are so popular too, is that they are less prone to snagging up on the bottom. The round lead or beadhead tungsten fly head on these flies, rolls along the bottom instead of dragging, ensuring less time retying jig flies on. A fly fishing jig may not be the most traditional of trout flies, but it is highly effective. Some of our favorites are the Beadhead Tungsten Frenchie Czech fly, which offers some extra pizzaz, and the Czech Nymph Caddis in olive, which has become a top czech nymphing fly choice throughout the world.

Here at The Fly Stop, we have all sorts of Czech nymphs for sale such as nymph caddis flies, nymph stoneflies, along with everything you need to get started in Czech Nymphing. But beware, once you learn to start fly fishing this way, because it is so effective, you will never want to do anything else!
