San Diego Fly Fishing Guides

Captain Alex Cady     Mako | Inshore | Bass | Carp | San Diego Bay | Mission Bay | Offshore

You can pretty much say that Alex was born with a fishing rod in his hand. He caught his first fish when he was only two years old with his Grandpa Joe. When Alex was six years old, he learned how to fly fish the streams and lakes near Mammoth lakes with his Father. Any chance Alex got to fish he would take it like before school at a local pond for bass or venturing offshore to chase Tuna and Sharks. At the age of 18, he moved from Mammoth Lakes and went to the Clearwater Guide School to chase his dream. In 2014 he moved down here to lead our fly fishing classes in Southern California and our Guide Service around the local inshore spots and lakes. We are now proud to have Alex as our head Southern California fly fishing guide and manager of The Fly Stop.

Captain Conway Bowman     mako | inshore | bass | carp

Conway Bowman is the owner/operator of Bowman Bluewater and a native San Diegan. He began fly fishing in Idaho at the age of eight and since then, he's mastered the rivers, lakes and sea. His extensive fishing knowledge literally circumnavigates the globe, and has earned him distinguished recognition as a Southern California fly fishing guide.  Conway has hosted numerous television shows such as "Fly Fishing the World," on the Sportsman Channel, ESPN's "In Search of Flywater", and "Dollar Wise Fly", on the Versus Network.  He is currently the host of "The Ford Outfitters", airing on the Sportsman Channel. Conway is also the current IGFA world record holder of a Redfish on 10 kg tippet, a 41.65 pound bull. Although not often, he’ll sometimes teach fly fishing classes in Southern California to locals. Among his many fishing achievements, Conway is most proud of his non-fishing ones.....marrying his wife Michelle, and being the proud father of their son, Max.

Captain Dave Trimble     mako | blue shark | offshore | trout

Dave is hands down one of the most knowledgeable san diego fly fishing guides about sharks. That comes in handy for any beginners needing some fly fishing lessons in San Diego. He has run fishing trips from Alaska to Panama, not only in salt, but in fresh water as well.  He has been a full-time charter captain for the last 15 years, with 12 plus years of experience right here in the San Diego area.  With over 2,000 shark fishing charters in his career, his passion, knowledge and dedication to the sport are virtually unparalleled. On his off days, which are an extremely rare thing, Dave works with the Marble Canyon Outfitters at Lee's Ferry, conducting electroshocking surveys and analyzing water samples from the Colorado River system.  Chances are, if Dave doesn't know something about fishing, that's because it probably doesn't exist!

Captain John D. Hendrickson     carp | bass |surf

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. He started fly fishing when he was 16 and now, at the age of 37, has turned his hobby into his career, guiding trips and teaching fly fishing classes Southern California. John has fished for everything from Lake Erie Steelhead to Pacific Mako Sharks.  As a matter of fact, if it swims, he's probably caught it on the fly. He even holds a Master Angler Award for a Carp that he caught while living in Colorado.  His passion for Carp fishing has led him to be featured in a number of tv shows, as well as a variety of books and magazines; most recently "The Orvis Guide to Fly Fishing for Carp" published in 2013. John is also the General Manager of TheFlyStop.com Fly Shop, where he provides helpful fly fishing lessons in San Diego and valuable insight on everything from fly tying to casting.
