Michigan

In our opinion, Michigan is one of the best, if not THE best fly fishing state in the U.S. That isn't surprising, considering it has everything from clear water "flats" style of fishing, to plenty of world class trout streams, lakes, and rivers. Even though this state may not pop up in your mind right away, many anglers find it to be true. The area has a number of fish species, which include salmon, steelhead, walleye, pike, panfish, bass, and of course trout. And while these species attract most anglers focus, the upper peninsula area has become really popular for it's flats style, clearwater, sight fishing for smallmouth bass and carp.  This diversity is a big draw for anglers. It gives people a chance to catch a variety of species without having to travel to multiple states. Places like the Au Sable, the Pere Marquette, and the Muskegon River, all offer some truly word class fly fishing.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a number of impressive statistics to share. These include the fact there are over 20,000 miles worth of cold water. This is the exact kind of water that trout love. Many of these waters are excellent for wading and shore fishing, which are favorites among anglers. It should also be mentioned that a good number of these rivers and streams are known for large hatches of aquatic insects, such as the fabled "hex" hatch. This can turn a decent fishing experience into an absolutely amazing one. Click the links on the left, to see some of our favorite places to fish in this state.
